Pens Plus was founded in 1997 by Allen and Lillian Gross, dealing exclusively in limited edition and custom made writing instruments. For the first five years the company specialized in the “secondary or after market,” obtaining sold-out limited editions for clients who needed certain pens to complete their collections. The company also dealt in closeout limited editions when they became available through certain distributors.
Then in 2003, the company started producing its own designs, which were produced for them by such well-known companies as Ancora, Bexley, Sailor, Stipula and Paul Rossi.
In 2005, Allen and Lillian had the opportunity to view various hand-painted miniature works of art that were produced in a small village outside of Moscow, Russia, and decided to see if the process could be applied to fountain pens. They contracted Bexley Pen to produce 200 pens with genuine mother-of-pearl barrels. With the aid of a new bi-lingual agent, Allen and Lillian traveled to that same little village in Russia and secured the talents of six outstanding artists. They also met a very talented young jeweler there, who later produced pens for them in the tradition of Carl Faberge.
To date, Pens Plus has produced over twenty sold-out limited editions and numerous one-of-a-kind pens, including two very special limited editions for Lexus USA. Credit for the design work goes to both Allen and Lillian because both must agree on a design or it simply doesn’t get produced.
So far the company’s track record is excellent, having produced limited editions in such varied techniques as Japanese maki-e, American scrimshaw, hand-painted Russian miniature, Faberge-style hot enamel, engraved sterling silver, gold and plastics. The company’s goal is to produce six to ten limited editions each year in various mediums for the mid-range pen collector.
