Cleo Skribent
Few words express world-renowned quality as simply as “Made in Germany.” In the past century marvelous feats have been achieved in numerous industries by German precision engineering. The products produced by Cleo are no exception. Cleo continues to produce its products entirely in Germany. Every single product is carefully crafted using technologically advanced methods at Cleo’s factory in the town of Bad Wilsnack, located near Berlin.
The company’s dedication to excellence dates back over 60 years to Cleo’s founding by Herbert Wurach as a metal component supplier for the manufacture of writing instruments in 1945. In 1956, the company was taken over by the town council of Bad Wilsnack and by 1965 Cleo was mainly focused on producing ballpoint and fountain pens. It was in this year that the company introduced the first version of the Skribent which was created as an inkpen for technical designers. With the success of the new Skribent Cleo became the most significant manufacturer of inkpens in the socialist economic world.
This success continued until the unification of Germany challenged the foundations of the firm. Rather than allow Cleo to silently fade away like so many other East German firms, factory managers Wolfgang Weiss and Peter Winter boldly decided to privatize the company. Considerable investments were made in production, warehouse, and office facilities. In 1999, the firm introduced the Messograf calliper pen and since then the firm and its product offerings have greatly expanded. The last year alone has seen the number of Cleo workers rise from 80 to over 100 and there is no end to the firm’s remarkable expansion in sight.
Originality is especially evident in Cleo’s Linea.Arte series. This line is based on the blueprints for a 1930s design originally produced by the Fend Company. Each pen is carefully crafted out of 92.5% sterling silver using an art déco pattern.
The Cleo Skribent line, made of synthetic resin, contains four varying models exhibiting combinations of platinum-plated 18-karat gold with Cleo’s logo represented on the nib and as a faceted jewel at the top of each pen or mechanical pencil.
The SilverSign line, created in the form of a standard pencil, provides the writer with a sterling silver device that exudes elegance but maintains its functional foundation. The compact version is perfect as an accessory for purses or organizers.
For everyday use, the Chiffre 2000 line is available in a matte or gloss version. The shaft is composed of palladium-plated brass and the grip is highly scratch-resistant as a result of its PVD (carbon/titanium) coating. Years of faithful service should be expected from any Chiffre 2000 instrument.
