David Broadwell

Imagine functional art meticulously crafted by hand, commissioned and designed specifically to be used and enjoyed by the individual collector. That is the goal of artist-craftsman David Broadwell, who makes one-of-a-kind fountain pens, art knives and fine accessories from his studio shop in North Texas. Broadwell is an accomplished custom art knife mak-er with twenty-four years’ experience shaping and sculpting a variety of metals, fine woods, ivories and stone. He decided to add fine writing instruments to his craft in 2001. Broadwell works directly with private collectors on writing instrument projects tailored to their individual interests. He also works through a few select dealers on limited edition de-signs. On occasion he has open speculation pieces available at shows or on his gallery website.

The Product
His work is known for flowing organic lines, a sculpt-ed interpretation style, and meticulous fit and fin-ish. In an age when many designers rely upon high tech machinery for faster production, you’ll still find Broadwell standing at the grinder or lathe and crafting each and every art knife or fountain pen by hand. He believes that uncompromising quality and superior fit and finish will always be a timeless art in the patient and experienced hands of a skilled artist-craftsman.

As a sole authorship artist, Broadwell sculpts and carves stylized interpretations: Art Deco themes and organic carved overlays. He designs his own pen clips as part of each pen theme and works on a number of dramatic theme collaborations with fine engraver Raymond Cover Jr. of St. Louis, MO. The two have completed a series of commissioned boxed fountain pen sets with Japanese Samurai themes. An elaborate collaboration piece named Poseidon was completed in 2005 and more Greek mythology themes are in the works.
The collaboration for the Hamilton Broadwell pens began when Joel Hamilton and Sherrell Tyree of Inkpen asked David Broadwell to design and make a modern version of the popular eyedropper-filled pen. The first limited edition of twenty-five pens features a warm, rich, wood-grain hard rubber, gold nib and a gold clip with a “shovel scoop” design. A second pen and third pen in the series are planned for 2006-2007.

Broadwell hallmarks each art knife with a stylized “B” on the ricasso of the blade, and each fountain pen is hallmarked with a bronze button set in the cap crown. All nibs are hand engraved with the stylized B as well. Broadwell’s art knife and foun-tain pen work can be commissioned directly from him. A gallery of recent works is showcased on his website.
