Kynsey

The Kynsey pen company of Madrid has found the place where art and utility converge, and the pens it produces do what they are designed to do: they write well. Director Antonio Sánchez, who has been selling and repairing pens since 1987, when he was just 15 years old, finds inspiration in his pen customers.

Sánchez searches for the best materials and artists to produce his pens, and he keeps his limited editions very small to maintain their exclusivity. The resin caps and barrels are produced in Italy, as are the jewelry-quality solid gold appointments. The 18-karat-gold nibs are German made; the pens are piston filled. And though Sánchez has a showroom to bring his elite clientele to his pens, he will also bring the pens to his customers upon request.

The limited edition painted pens are produced in very small quantities—never more than ten pieces are created, and each takes about eight months to produce. Every resin cap and barrel travels to Russia, where it is then embellished with miniature masterpieces of every kind. Using one-haired “brushes,” Russian artists painstakingly transform each piece. And what once was a pen becomes a tiny cylindrical canvas that is no less wonderful for its diminutive size. The artists live in small villages in which this art form is kept alive, and they use vivid pigments made from local vegetation to create their many hues. After the artwork is completed, signed and numbered, the pen is given five coats of clear vegetal lacquer to maintain its beauty.

Thus far, Kynsey’s Russian Masterpiece collections include such appropriate subjects as Great Inventors, Fairy Tales, the Four Elements, Civilization, the Erotic and more. Each broad topic offers an unlimited number of possibilities, and Sánchez is never without a roster of ideas for new designs. Within the brand’s Special Editions category, such masterpieces as Rembrandt’s “Return of the Prodigal Son” and Michelangelo’s “The Creation” are perfectly reproduced on the cap and barrel of each pen. And the pens themselves are so beautifully machined that when the one on which “The Creation” is depicted is capped closed, the fingertips of the Creator (on the barrel) and Adam (on the cap) align perfectly just as in the original painting. Each writing instrument, or set, comes in a lacquered wooden box.
