Pelikan
In 1838, when chemist Carl Hornemann first distributed his printed price list for art supplies to stationery dealers, no one could have imagined that the writing instruments that would follow would one day be sold all over the globe. It was Günther Wagner, who joined the company as works manager in 1863 and later took it over, who introduced the new name of “Pelikan.” Wagner was one of the first manufacturers to guarantee the quality of his products with an eye-catching trademark—the pelican— that originated from his family coat of arms. By November 27, 1878, he had had the name, “Pelikan,” one of the first German trademarks to exist, officially registered. Since the founding of the company, more than 168 years ago, Pelikan has evolved into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of writing instruments and school and office supplies. The successful trademark is registered in 145 different countries.
Pelikan has been on the cutting edge of writing technology since its earliest years, and numerous patents and innovations are still regarded as groundbreaking in the field of quality writing instruments as well as school and office supplies. Since 1929, the Pelikan fountain pen, with its patented differential- piston-filler mechanism, large ink-view window and non-blotting ink feed, has been a byword for perfect fountain pen technology. Celebrities from the fields of politics, business and culture worldwide use Pelikan fountain pens. And for many years they have also been presented as official gifts from the Federal Republic of Germany.
The year 2003 was an eventful one for Pelikan Vertriebsgesellschaft GmbH & Co. KG in Germany. The company was given a new corporate identity and a new corporate design. The management also relocated, moving to a modern office building at List yacht harbour in Hanover. Most of the company’s products are still made in Germany and in 1973, the production plant moved from Hanover to Vöhrum, some 30 km away. In their 21,000-square-meter area, unsurpassed quality writing instruments, writing instruments for school and young people are produced. Today, the Pelikan brand still stands for German-made quality, and many of its products remain the undisputed world leader in pen technology.
