Sailor

Sailor was founded in 1911 in Hiroshima, Japan, by Mr. Kyogoro, who got the inspiration for the name of the company from a visiting British sailor who showed him his fountain pen. Sailor became the first company to produce fountain pens in Japan, and it is one of the oldest established companies in the writing instruments business. Sailor was also the first company in Japan to manufacture ballpoint pens when they arrived on the scene in the mid-20th century. Sailor has always prided itself on the use of its own man-ufactured nib units made exclusively at the Sailor factory. Even today, each is individually tested and inspected.

Sailor has enjoyed the services of Nobuyoshi Nagahara, the nib specialist who has worked in the Hiroshima factory for almost 60 years. He is in total charge of nib production and inspection and he also makes his own specialist nibs that are now world renowned. Nagahara and his son, Yukio Nagahara (fully trained by his Dad), both travel the world and conduct nib clinics and demonstrations in key pen specialist retail stores in Japan, the United States, and Europe. They also attend many of the key pen shows throughout the world.

The Product
Sailor has unique access to the special Japanese materials and techniques that abound in this part of the world, to regional maki-e artists, and to certain unique and rare materials, such as Su-sutake bamboo that is used for production of some limited edition products.
“Susutake” (Smoked Bamboo) is a special type of bamboo obtained from the roof timbers from old traditional Japanese thatched-roof style houses most of which are in excess of 150 years old. The surface of the bamboo is naturally colored to a deep red brown color from continuous exposure to the smoke of the “Irori” (a traditional Japanese sunken fire/hearth). Different color tones are seen in the surface of the material depending upon its location and the type and quantity of the smoke over time. The continuous smoke over centuries has “seasoned” the bamboo material making it flexible and stable. The special appeal of Susutake is the fact that it is a natural material. Susutake is a highly treasured material used in traditional tea ceremonies in Japan for centuries. The raw material is becoming increasingly rare and difficult to obtain.
The many distinctive resources and materials of the Sailor product range make it exclusive in nature. Meticulous effort and refinement goes into every aspect of the writing instrument, with special attention given to the craftsmanship of the nibs.
The Sailor pen company has a vision to become a leading global brand, producing striking writing instruments that combine exceptional and high-qual-ity materials with Japanese style. Sailor is rapidly developing its international distribution with key partners, and the brand is now a major player in the world market.  The Sailor Pen Company offers the customer a unique variety of writing instruments which are renowned for their quality and performance and carry the special lifetime guarantee of writing pleasure and excellence.
