Dragon Pens

Dragon Luxury Writing Instruments is named after the beloved and revered Asian dragon.  Located in the San Francisco Bay area of California, Dragon is the brainchild of Dr. Joyce Tang and spouse Jeff Boschert. “We make pens that are different,” they say. “Holding a shiny squid pen in your hand is probably unlike any experience you’ve had before, and this is art.”
Tang started off as a collector of vintage pens, and while recovering from an injury, had the chance to learn to make jewelry. Realizing she could make pens with these skills, she was hooked. And now the two spend most of their waking hours as full-time pen makers. They built their pen-making studio, learned metal smithing, lost-wax casting, hand chasing, and how to use a lathe—all to create pens like things that have never been made before. Most importantly, before they began their pen business, they were pen collectors themselves; they understand the importance of a well-made writing instrument.
Their philosophy is to use gemstones as an integral part of the pen designs, rather than mere decorations added to pre-existing designs. “We bring sculptural concepts to life. Pens are three dimensional. They have motion. They take on a life of their own,” they say.
The Jules pen is a case in point. Squids have ink. Named after Jules Verne, author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules has genuine gemstones for eyes. Stones used for the Jules series are red Burmese ruby and blue Ceylon sapphire. Tang textures the 18-karat gold nibs by hand with a shimmering Nautilus (which is the name of the submarine in the book), and tunes every nib to write beautifully. The pen barrel is made of lathe-turned Italian resin in pearlescent, deep ocean blue. Each pen is lovingly and meticulously finished.  Jules is available in an eyedropper or cartridge/converter filling fountain pen; it also comes in a rollerball. There are five color combinations to choose from, with different metals and gemstone colors. Many pen collectors use Jules as a daily writer; what a way to make a splash!
