Fisher

Paul C. Fisher was born in Lebanon, Kansas, in 1913, the son of a Methodist minister. He left college to pursue a full-time job for a bakery, where his engineering skills came to light when he designed a new bread rack design. After going back to college and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, Paul became the general manager of Aetna Ball Bearing Manufacturing Company. Fisher then met Milton Reynolds of Reynolds ballpoint fame, who somewhat established Fisher’s career in pens. Reynolds wanted Fisher to help him produce a new ballpoint pen, but Fisher declined the offer. Instead, Fisher agreed to supply Reynolds with parts for his pens. Many years later, when Reynolds was no longer producing pens, Fisher began designing and making his own. In 1953, Fisher invented a refill that could be used in many different pens. He then went on to invent a refill that uses visco-elastic, thixotropic ink fed through a tungsten carbide ball and pressurized. This ink writes only when it is supposed to and does not rely on gravity as all other refills do. Fisher’s refills are famed for their ability to write in space and have been used on many space missions. The ink can even write under water, upside down, and in extreme temperatures.
Fisher went on to create his own line of pens that used his refills. The Bullet pen is featured in the Museum of Modern Art, and the NASA Astronaut pen is the most well-known pen in the Fisher lineup. Fisher Space Pen currently resides in Boulder City, Nevada, its home since 1976. Today, a strong focus of the brand is pens for military personnel, firefighters, medical personnel and, of course, astronauts. Their latest pen is the Trekker Space Pen, which is designed for outdoor enthusiasts. It comes with a key ring, carabiner, and break-away lanyard.
Paul Fisher passed away in 2006 at the age of 93. Today, the company is run by his son Cary, and Dock Wong, who worked for Fisher for over 50 years and has been the general manager for the last 15. Cary and Dock are both equal owners of the company, as Paul left it to both of them equally. Fisher Space Pen continues to create quality products that live up to Paul C. Fisher’s legacy.
